Mo Cheeks, Bread & Justice

Midwest Tiptree World Bread Awards Hero USA supported by IBIE

Bread & Justice is a philanthropic cottage bakery that donates the profits from the sale of their handmade sourdough bread to non-profit organizations working towards a more just society.

Founder, Mo Cheeks, began baking his naturally-leavened sourdough bread in early 2020 as a way to have fun and stay connected to friends, by giving them his freshly baked bread.

After the unsettling events of that summer, most notably the killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, baking bread became Mo’s self-care. In the September he joined the Bakers Against Racism group in their national bake sale. Mo baked every day for 15 days straight and raised nearly $1000 for the ACLU of Wisconsin and Black Voters Matter.

From this project, Mo realized he could transition baking bread for self-care to activism. And so Bread & Justice was born. He started it as a newsletter detailing upcoming bake sales, reflections and stories pertaining to social justice and then, after a steady flow of requests for orders, developed it into a fully fledged microbakery.

Mo runs the sourdough bakery from his home kitchen in addition to working a full time job. On ‘bake days’, his alarm goes off at 3am to preheat the ovens; he gets up early and bakes sourdough loaves until 9am, before heading out to his day job.

Bread & Justice continues to live up to its name, with 100% of the profits from Mo's bread sales being donated to organizations raising awareness for racial justice and working towards a more just society.
